You'll be amazed to know that Queen Victoria began the trend of wearing white for a wedding. Before that wealthy women dressed in sumptuous gowns of various colours often in rich heavy material such as velvet or jacquard. Colours such as deep reds, greens and blues were chosen over ‘light’ colours. When Victoria married Albert she chose an off-white creamy colour which was unusual at the time, made in heavy satin fabric.
