Is it essential to send out save-the-date invites followed by a wedding invitation? Can't we let go of one? I am bit confused actually as I have seen a surging trend wherein couples are sending their save-the-dates much earlier than the wedding. Followed by a physical wedding card close to the time of thei rceremony.

I believe either one should do. Do not create unnecessary work load for yourself.

There isn't any compulsion as such, But, the benefit of actually sending one is that it gives your guests ample time to make arrangements for your ceremony as usually save the dates are sent months before the wedding,
