Is it okay not to call friends on wedding?

We are planning for an intimate wedding with 30-40 guests. And thought of hosting a separate get together with friends after wedding. Is this a good idea or will this look rude?

I feel it's a very personal choice and I know it's very hard to make such decisions. You can always speak to your friends and I'm sure they'll understand the situation. And I feel it's better to plan a get together before the wedding to ease down the entire process.
